Personal
Dr. Lloyd H. Stegemann was born the last day of December 1968 in Lampasas, Texas, where his father was stationed in the United States Army.

Shortly after, Dr. Stegemann’s father left the military and the family moved to the Midwest. He spent his formative years in Iowa, but, as he puts it, he “finally returned to God’s Country – Texas – during my high school years.”

After high school, a basketball and academic scholarship took Dr. Stegemann to a small liberal arts college in Kansas. While school and basketball took up the majority of his time, he also became very involved in student government and eventually served as student body president. While he enjoyed his time in Kansas, Stegemann realized, once again, that “there is no place like home,” he says.

Realizing this, he transferred to Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) where he graduated with honors. While a student there, he was active in student affairs and served in several leadership positions. Most importantly, he also met the beautiful woman who would become his wife.

After earning his undergraduate degree, Dr. Stegemann began medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston. It was there he found his calling – surgery.

“Although I have always wanted to be a doctor and in particular a surgeon, it was through my studies and work with surgeons like Dr. ‘Red’ Duke and Dr. John Potts that I truly knew surgery was my calling in life,” Dr. Stegemann says.

While in medical school, Dr. Stegemann was married, and the couple was blessed with the birth of twin daughters.
In 1998, his residency training in General Surgery brought the family to San Antonio, where he worked at University Hospital, Audie Murphy VA Hospital, and Wilford Hall Medical Center. His training included extensive experience in the pre-, post-, and intra-operative care of surgical patients from the very young to the very old. He also gained valuable experience in the laparoscopic (minimally invasive) approach to many operations.

As a senior resident, his responsibilities also included teaching both medical students and junior residents the art and science of surgery. While residency training demanded a hectic lifestyle, Dr. Stegemann and his wife still found time to add two more daughters to their family.

Now on staff at Methodist Hospital, Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, and Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center, Dr. Stegemann is a member of the American Medical Association, the Bexar County Medical Society, and the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. He is also a candidate member of the American College of Surgeons.

In his free time, Dr. Stegemann enjoys playing basketball, reading, and collecting antique microscopes.

For Dr. Stegemann, the satisfaction of his patients keeps his motivated and engaged in his work.

“Although I have been trained extensively in the entire gamut of general surgery and feel comfortable performing most operations, my main interest is in weight loss surgery,” he says. “I found myself drawn to this area not only because of the technical demands of the operation, but also to the profound impact this surgery has on the life of patients. Every time I see a patient back in the office or go to a gastric bypass support group meeting and hear the incredible stories of how people are once again enjoying their lives and living healthier, it reaffirms to me why I love weight loss surgery.”
